American, German & Oriental Cockroach Prevention & Control in Your Aspen, CO House

Even if you live under a rock in the United States, chances are you have encountered a cockroach. Where they all look similar, there are different species of cockroaches found throughout the world. Over 4,500 actually, but only three of which are more common to the Colorado borders. Not only are these little critters grotesque and vile with their indifference to their surroundings and food sources, but they can be a potential health risk for those that have allergies as well as the various bacterium, germs, diseases, and viruses they can potentially spread simply by traversing across a surface you interact with. Additionally, cockroaches can be destructive in nature as they feast on what they can and harvest materials for nesting purposes. With that in mind, we at Ram Pest Control would like to expound on the three common species of cockroaches found in Colorado; American Cockroaches, German Cockroaches, and Oriental Cockroaches.

American Cockroaches

American cockroaches are among the largest species of cockroach found in the United States. They can grow between 1 ½” and 2” long. From multiple shades of brown, reddish brown, and mahogany, these cockroaches come in a variety of colors and most bare a yellow band mark just behind their head. By the time the American cockroach reaches adulthood they will have evolved wings, which they don’t often use. An American cockroach looks awkward and clumsy when they fly; generally they will just run. American cockroaches are clocked running at 3 miles per hour, which is the equivalent of a person running 210 miles per hour. With this particularly skill, it makes sense they don’t fly as often as run!

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches will reach about 1 ¼” long one by adulthood. They are primarily dark brown and have stripes running down the length of their bodies. They are attracted to fermented foods but will eat whatever crosses their path. German cockroaches have wings, but don’t really fly. These particular cockroaches prefer the much warmer and humid areas than other cockroach species. During the winter months they will hunker down indoors, but most will venture back outside in the warmer months.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental Cockroaches are often referenced as “water bugs” due to their preferred moist environment conditions. This is why these particularly gross cockroaches can be found often living in the sewer system. These cockroaches are one of the few species that have a shiny appearance and are most likely black in color but some can venture into the reddish color scale. By the time Oriental cockroaches are full grown adults, they will reach up to an inch long. After they have traveled through the sewer system and into your home, they are often discovered in basements and crawl spaces.
